Slovakia vs Germany – Germany Shocked by Slovakia in World Cup Qualifying Loss

Date:

Germany suffered an astonishing 2–0 loss to Slovakia in Bratislava, marking the first time they lost a World Cup qualifying match away from home. Slovakia scored deep into first-half stoppage time through Dávid Hancko, and then found a second through a curling finish from David Strelec in the 55th minute. The aftermath posed several serious questions for Germany, who have now lost three straight matches, including Nations League matches to Portugal and France.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann didn’t hold back in his criticism of the team after the match, pointing to the lack of emotional intensity from his squad and lack of desire to win. He pointed out that just having technical quality means nothing when the will to fight isn’t there, and suggested that it might be better to select players for their mental fortitude and ability to handle competitive situations rather than skill.

The loss puts Germany under immediate pressure in Group A. Northern Ireland’s 3-1 win over Luxembourg has moved them to the top of the group and made Germany’s task harder. Now, their qualifier at home against Northern Ireland will become a must-win fixture for Nagelsmann’s side if they are to stop the rot.
