Abdullahi Sule, Governor of Nasarawa state, has warned political aspirants and their supporters to stop early political activities connected with the 2027 general elections.
The state governor communicated through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Peter Ahemba, that early political activities are common in the state, which is illegal, distracting, and may eventually lead to tensions.
Governor Sule confirmed that the only agency that is authorized to announce timetable with the budgets for the elections is the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and he has appealed to political aspirants to conform to electoral rules.
He commented that all political activities must be done within the ambit of the law, and he urged politicians to pay attention to governance rather than engage in political activities that are too early to legally participate in.
His warning comes in the light of recent activities of political aspirants being engaged in online political mobilization and the sighting of campaign posters around the state. Some of the political aspirants from the ruling party the All Progressives Congress (APC) are Africa’s former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, Senator Ahmed Wadada, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, Dr. Musa Ahmed Mohammed and Engr. Mohammed Sani Haruna.
On the opposing side, Barrister Hassan Mohammed and David Umbugadu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have also begun to mobilize and are seen to be promoted by supporters, in advance of the campaign season being declared by the INEC.
Governor Sule expressed concern that these early political engagements will heat up the political space, diverting leaders’ and citizens’ attention away from the all-important development work that is currently underway and planned.
He asserted it would be better for political figures and aspirants to commit their time and space to pushing and supporting the government’s agenda in enhancing the security, infrastructure and quality of social services across the length and breadth of Nasarawa State.
In Addressing insecurity issues, he reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving border patrols and logistics supply to security agencies, as well as continuing to deploy modern technologies in surveillance.e encouraged traditional rulers, youth leaders and political stakeholders about their important roles in ensuring things do not deteriorate in respect of peace and stability in Nasarawa.
Political analysts note that Sule’s intervention is timely, as early campaigns have become a recurring feature of Nigeria’s electoral landscape, often leading to factional conflicts within parties. By calling for restraint, the governor is seeking to ensure that political activities remain within the boundaries of the law while governance remains the central focus until the official campaign season.
Governor Sule’s timely admonition and intervention could demonstrate how political ambition and responsible leadership can co-exist. With the general elections coming up in 2027 observers are optimistic that governing counsel will provide how political actors in Nasarawa and in other states conduct their political activities within the parameters of the INEC’s final electoral timetable.
