Hon David Ali Gwantu, the serving councillor for Gwantu Ward in Sanga Local Government area of Kaduna State, has been kidnapped by bandits.
The attack occurred shortly after midnight on Friday, when gunmen broke into his Gwantu home and abducted him in front of his terrified family.
Hon. Gwantu’s abduction comes only days after 7 people – most of whom were children – were murdered during a cattle raid in Unguwan Rimi village in Kauru Local Government area of Kaduna State.
The councilman’s abduction highlights the continued insecurity in the region of Southern Kaduna, despite the ongoing efforts of authorities in Kaduna State to restore peace through the so-called “Kaduna Model.”
This peace initiative involved engaging notorious bandit leaders, some of whom subsequently surrendered and entered government rehabilitation programs. The scheme also aimed to reopen critical roads and encourage displaced villagers to return home.
However, critics say this peace agreement has questionable terms, no transparency, and does not allow the victims to have a voice thus the rights of communities remain unprotected.
The ongoing abduction serves as another disturbing reminder that this peace process is incomplete. Local leaders and residents are deeply concerned as insecurity continues to envelop Southern Kaduna.
As action mounts to secure the release of the councillor, there is more pressure on the government and community to ensure public officials are safe, and strengthen security across the region.
