Nigeria’s chances in the 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa have taken a hit, as they must now do without star striker Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen, the 2023 African Footballer of the Year, sustained a foot injury from the Super Eagles most recent match win against Rwanda and has been ruled out of the match in Bloemfontein. Nigeria is clearly without their leading scorer and attacking force to even replace him will be a huge challenge for Nigeria going into the match.
This left Coach Éric Chelle no choice but to have to rework his game plan. Some of their options could be Tolu Arokodare of Genk, who at 6’3 could cause complications for the South African backline with his height and strength. If fit, Chelle could also go with Taiwo Awoniyi, who brings a level of strength and finishing ability to the front line that Osimhen usually does. Chelle could also use Kelechi Iheanacho to play role as a deep false nine, to collect the ball, and get the wingers – Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze involved in the play.
Without Osimhen, Nigeria may struggle to maintain collective and overall midfield control. In that case, Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi’s creativity, defensive work, and ground coverage will be even more important in ensuring the team’s balance while relentlessly attacking for goals.
They have relied heavily on Osimhen’s energy and precision finishing paving the way for Nigeria’s recent success; however, with Osimhen out, it is now up to others to step in.
