Police Arrest Self-Proclaimed “Obi of Lagos” Over Fake Installation

Date:

The Lagos state police command has arrested one 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, who paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos,” along with three accomplices trying to install him.

According to police, the suspects were planning to unveil a so-called ₦1.5 billion “Palace of the Obi of Lagos State” while hosting an “Ofala/New Yam Festival” on September 13 at Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin.

When an invitation to the event started to circulate widely, concerns were raised about its legitimacy, and it was later confirmed through intelligence reports that the installation was fraudulent, and that they had no legal or cultural basis. Officers moved quickly to seal the premises, and arrest Azubike, along with his accomplices Chibuzor Ani, Martins Nwaodika, and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi.

The operation was carried out by the Eko Strike Force along with other tactical units that make up the command. Police reported that the intervention was needed to prevent a breach of public peace, and also to protect unsuspecting members of the public.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh condemned the actions of the suspects. He stated that attempts to exploit and abuse the traditional titles are hostile. He reminded residents of the Lagos state Obas and Chiefs Laws (2015), which prohibits any unauthorized installations, or coronation.

The suspects are in police custody at the state police headquarters in Ikeja, however the command indicated they would be charged to court as soon as the investigation was concluded.

The incident has generated public conservation. Many observers have called for stronger and more enforceable measures to protect Nigeria’s traditional institutions from being exploited.

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant in advancing and promoting the same level of awareness and reporting through suspicious activity reporting events, as well as reporting illegal installations and activities for traditional titles. The authorities have clarified that only recognized and legally backed titles will enjoy protection under the law.

With the arrests, the Lagos state police conveyed that they remain committed to sustaining peace and upholding cultural and traditional values in Lagos state.
