President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to return to Abuja on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, after completing his working vacation in Europe. He will immediately resume official duties upon returning to the country.
Tinubu left Nigeria on September 4, and had a stop in France and the United Kingdom. While he was in Paris, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron for a private luncheon where the leaders spoke to share ideas on how to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance mutually beneficial cooperation in the areas of agriculture, health and textile.
His Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga has confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday. He also stated that the president decided to shorten his vacation and approved a full return to work once he arrived home.
The announcement comes as Nigeria is grappling with ongoing economic and security issues. Analysts believe that the President’s return signals an urgent need to refocus on domestic issues.
The President’s several trips abroad have drawn criticism from parts of the public and opposition spokespersons asserting that extended travel outside of the country distracts from immediate and pressing domestic problems, but according to his aides, most, if not all, travel has been part of necessary diplomacy that has benefitted Nigeria’s global standing.
While Onanuga’s statement did not specify why he cut short his vacation, there is speculation that when he returns to the office, the President will announce new strategies to address ongoing concerns about inflation, exorbitant fuel costs, and national security.
Nigerians will now be curious about when the President plans to address these issues. For many, this will be his golden opportunity to demonstrate principled leadership at a time when public trust in government decision-making is waning.
With his vacation officially over, the focus will shift back to Abuja, and all eyes will be on the president’s next actions.
