Elders in Rivers State have called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the legislators in the State House of Assembly to set aside differences for the good of the state.

In their statement, the elders explained that the politics of distraction have ended and that leaders must now pursue direction, progress, and unity. They observed that crude comments and inflammatory statements made in the media only promote division and may create a downward spiral of disruption in the state.

The elders praised the already-taken steps toward reconciliation, recalling the President’s commitment to restoring peace. They reminded both the governor and the Assembly leadership that the people expect them to honour all the pledges they have made in full.

The elders also expressed their thanks to Rivers residents for their patience shown amidst insecurity that is circulating during the tension soaked period. They also thanked the President for carrying out that task as a frontliner during the crisis’s peak, as well as former Governor Nyesom Wike for his willingness to facilitate a meeting with some critical stakeholders.

In their message, the elders emphasized that the state’s collective interests must take precedence over personal or political differences. They urged all parties to remain calm, show restraint, and work toward lasting peace.

The elders further emphasized the need for stability and progress for the people of Rivers State, adding both of these elements are more appropriate than the politics of conflict experienced previously. They stated that by focusing on peace and unity, Rivers state can overcome any crisis and create a brighter future for its citizens.
