Shoprite has closed its stores in Ibadan and Ilorin, while the outlets in Lagos and Abuja remain open but have empty aisles and shelves.
The firm had previously opened its Ring Road and Mokola stores in Ibadan, but they are now closed with signs citing “circumstances beyond immediate control.” The only branch in Ilorin has also closed, but employees say the closures can be attributed to getting “dislodged in the supply chain.”
In Lagos, the Ikeja City Mall outlet is open but struggling to restock items quickly enough to meet demand. Shoppers encounter empty aisles, and foot traffic has noticeably reduced. The same is true for the Jabi Lake Mall branch in Abuja, which has not had product deliveries in weeks. As a result, the store sections are empty.
Shoprite Nigeria is currently operated under the leadership of Ketron Investment Limited after it was sold by the South African parent company. Rising operating costs, the reduction of consumer demand, and competitive pressure are all putting the company in an increasingly difficult position.
The Management has however reassured customers that it is negotiating with suppliers and that it promised to restock before the end of September. Meanwhile, customers and employees are growing increasingly frustrated with the prolonged situation.
The retailer is experiencing similar issues in other states as well apart from the afore mentioned states. Rentals have become expensive, utility bills continue to rise, and the supply chain is not stable enough to produce tangible profit margins. These issues also reflect Nigeria’s retail market’s general reaction to inflationary pressures and overall economic uncertainty.
For many people, the closures and half-empty stores raise concerns about Shoprite’s future in Nigeria. Consumers want to know if Shoprite will reopen, while employees and surrounding businesses are concerned about the economic implications of continued closures.
The next upcoming weeks will be crucial. If supply chains are restored and stores are restocked as promised, Shoprite may reclaim customer trust. However, if closures continue and shelves remain empty, the once-dominant retail behemoth could suffer a major further setback.
