Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that more governors will defect to the ruling party in the lead up to the 2027 elections.
Yilwatda made the statement while attending a meeting held in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, where he indicated that the recent deflections were one expression of confidence building towards the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, and the overall performance to date.
Yilwatda pointed to the actions of the Governor of Delta state Sheriff Oborevwori, and the Governor of Akwa Ibom state Umo Eno specifically as defining evidence. The actions of the two governors, he suggested was confirming a long acceptance of Tinubu over the last several months, as the performance president and “number one, Mr. Integrity.”
The APC Chairman also stated that the political party was always open, saying, “We have had numerous discussions with certain governors and lawmakers in the national assembly. Now there are too many active figures starting to discuss aligning themselves with the vision of Tinubu.”
He referred to Tinubu as a lion, that he could not be ignored. He dismissed political opponents as mere noise while the APC remains focused. He praised what was happening in the South-South and South-East regions for their emerging unity; Yilwatda interpreted the actions of those regions’ governing leaders as recognition of Tinubu and the administration.
For Bayelsa, the state chapter of the APC confirmed they were committed to the president. There members expressed Tinubu was the only 2027 candidate selected and they acknowledged Tinubu for his transformational efforts and dedication to solving infrastructure challenges, while also focusing on the economy and national cohesion.
The APC Chairman disclosed that political momentum was increasing and that it was favoring the ruling political party. He believed that as defectors continued to enter the APC, they would remain politically understated by continuing their administrative dominance.e.
With the general elections less than two years away, the APC was establishing their groundwork. He explained that the trend of defections suggested that Nigerians were responding to the agenda of Tinubu and wanted to attach themselves.
He also praised the collaboration of many from the South-South and South-East. According to Yilwatda, regional leaders have adopted the vision articulated by Tinubu and his administration.
The APC Chairman stated that the ruling party had a strategy, and that the defections would only strengthen the APC’s position in the political landscape.
