Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday led a group to meet with the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr., in Abuja. The meeting, which Atiku posted on his official Facebook profile, dealt with issues of democracy, security, and economic collaboration between both nations.

Atiku characterized the engagement as a significant step toward solidifying Nigeria’s long-standing friendship with the United States. He reiterated that preserving democracy and strengthening national security are still critical to ensuring opportunity for Nigerians.

Both sides agreed that true prosperity must go beyond economic numbers and result in genuine changes in the lives of ordinary people.

Ambassador Mills reaffirmed the US’ commitment to assisting Nigeria in strengthening democratic institutions and combating insecurity. He went on to add that lasting prosperity cannot be achieved without good governance and strong institutions.

The meeting occurred in a period when Nigeria has been grappling with deepening economic and security implications. Rampant poverty, hyperinflation and insecurity, have all led to a barrage of complaints against the current administration. Many observers see Atiku’s meeting with the American envoy as a sign that he intends to continue steering the national dialogue ahead of the 2027 elections.

At the meeting, Atiku remarked it was indeed an honour to have led his delegation to the Ambassador’s office. He expressed excitement about the prospect of democracy, peace and prosperity as a result of the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the United States. The visit demonstrates to Nigerians that international alliances remain relevant in dealing with current pressing issues.
