Nigeria faces a power outage as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) goes on indefinite strike. This follows an ultimatum issued to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for failing to address unresolved staff issues.

The union stated that TCN has failed to address a number of serious issues. These include failure to pay the national minimum wage, the hiring of casual workers, the failure to pay salaries since April 2025, and lack of equipment and tools.

It has also stated that management failed to provide workers with necessary safety equipment. The union stated that as a result of management’s failure to provide a clear path forward on addressing these issues, workers were compelled with no other option to withdraw their service.

“We sent a clear directive to all of NUEE’s membership across the country in full compliance to the strike order until all of our demands were met,” the union said.

The union also stated that if the current state of discontent persists, the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) will deteriorate further.

This Nigeria electricity workers strike raises the possibility of a national blackout. Homes, businesses, hospitals, and many public services may lose power as a result of a grid failure. Previous industrial actions by Electricity Workers across the country resulted in the shutdown of all transmission stations, leaving millions without electricity for days.

Experts warned that prolonged outages on the grid will have with severe economic consequences. Small businesses that rely on electricity for daily operations will even fare worse in the long run than hospitals in terms of public service delivery.

The government and TCN must work quickly to resolve this situation. Negotiations with the union will be required to avoid a national blackout and restore the power sector to normalcy.
