A nationwide blackout has been averted after electricity workers, who are members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), halted their strike action. The industrial action, which lasted about 10 hours, was called off following urgent intervention by the Federal Government.
After hours of discussions between Senior officials from the Ministry of Power, Ministry of labour, Transmission Company of Nigeria, (TCN), and representatives of the unions at Abuja, both parties reached agreements on a resolve for the crisis.
As part of the deal, the unions will present, and reconvene a standing committee report on outstanding issues, by October 6th – 7th 2025. The union is to commence execution of the report later this month.
TCN and the National Independent System Operator (NISO) will conduct a joint assessment of the financial impact of the committee’s recommendations. They are mandated to submit an implementation plan to the Honourable Minister of Power and the Unions.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) has also been directed to fast-track the tariff reviews for TCN and NISO to achieve financial viability. Most importantly, the resolution guarantees that no worker will be sanctioned as a result of their involvement in the strike.
Union leaders stated that the negotiations yielded positive results, but reminded that they could embark on industrial action again if the agreements were violated. The leaders emphasized that workers are generally willing to corporate, but only if their promises are met.
For now, electric power has resumes throughout the country, and many Nigerians who feared prolonged darkness welcomed the quick resolution.
