Rasheed Ladoja’s path to becoming the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan is a tale of perseverance, tradition, and determination that began decades ago and culminated in 2025.

Ladoja’s journey began the day he was installed as the Mogaji of the Arusa Compound in Isale-Osi. This marked the start of his ascent through Ibadan’s traditional hierarchies. He rose through the chieftaincy ranks numerous times. In 1993, he was made Jagun Olubadan. After that, he ascended each of the 22 steps in the Otun rank. Each subsequent ascension brought greater responsibility and prominence though.

In 2022, Ladoja ascended to the Otun Olubadan rank, which is the second-highest civil chieftain and the highest senior chief for the Olubadan line of ascension. At this point, Ladoja was the most senior candidate, following the passing of the late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, to assume the position of Olubadan designate.

Ladoja’s ascent to the Olubadan throne was eventful. In 2017, the then-Governor wanted to elevate several traditional rulers at once, and Ladoja resisted. He went to court to have the old system preserved. He was adamant that the Ibadan system of chieftaincy succession should be fixed and free from political influence.

When the government later amended chieftaincy laws, one clause redefined eligibility: only “beaded crown Obas” could ascend the throne. That amendment forced Ladoja’s hand. He accepted the beaded crown in 2024 to safeguard his path to the throne.

On this day of his coronation, the city of Ibadan is going agog. From Ring Road to Bodija and Mokola, banners and drumming marked the occasion. Dignitaries from across the country will be gathered to witness the coronation. Of all Olubadans, this may be remembered as one of the largest Olubadan coronations to have ever taken place in the historic city.

For Ladoja, the throne is both a personal experience of victory, and a collective heritage. Ladoja stressed once, when he ascended the throne, that it was not a political representation, but rather, was for heritage, tradition, and service. Today, Ladoja would culminate his lifelong vision.
