Kano NNPP Expels Lawmaker Abdulmumin Jibrin Over Anti-Party Allegations

Date:

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)in Kano has expelled Senator Abdulmumin Jibrin, citing anti-party activities and non-payment of contributions to the party. The State chairman of the party, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa announced the expulsion of Jibrin and accused him of destroying party unity, while he was in debt with his statutory contributions.

Jibrin, who is the Congressman for the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, had been at the center of a recent controversy, when he wrote on social media, that his current position and challenges could lead him to another party (APC, PDP and others) which drew a backlash from fellow party members.

However, the expulsion has not been without issues. There is also a faction of the party led by Jibrin Doguwa who claimed that Dungurawa’s sanctions are illegal, and questioned whether he has the power to sanction a sitting Legislator. Doguwa warned that if the issues are not resolved, he would take the matter to court.

A shocked Jibrin said he reacted to media reports announcing the expulsion from the NNPP. I was denied my right to be heard; which is why I have no regrets on the expulsion. He said he will not be taking the expulsion action to court, but if asked to, he is willing to settle his statutory contributions.

Political observers believe the expulsion will only exacerbate internal rifts and divisions within the NNPP in Kano, where they are still a major player; while, political analysts also opined that internal conflict among Kano party members will impede the party’s unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

For the moment, Jibrin has not disclosed what his next political move would be. He has however asked his supporters to remain calm, while he considers his next political movement. Far from the controversy, he also wished his former party members in the NNPP well, as he exits the party.
