Supporters of Siminalayi Fubara gathered at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday, hoping to see the governor after Rivers State’s six-month emergency rule ended.
The supporters sung solidarity songs and were displaying placards as they endured waiting. However, by press time, the governor had yet to arrive, and his exact location remained unknown.
Authorized security personnel were closely monitoring the area surrounding Government House, restricting some access and directing vehicles to avoid congestion in and around the area.
It will be recalled that on March 18, President Bola Tinubu issued an emergency rule in the state following an extensive political scuffle between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The issue also led to division in the State Assembly, with 27 members supporting Wike and a few supporting the governor.
President Tinubu has now announced the suspension of the emergency order after the six month tenure thus returning Fubara, the deputy and Assembly back to their constitutional roles.
For now, it is uncertain. Supporters still have faith but the hope has fast diminished by the governor’s silence. The people of Rivers simply want the government back to normalcy after months of crisis.
In the meantime, the atmosphere is a mix of optimism and unease, with residents.
