The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) announced the payment of arrears to corps members after a two-month break. This is beneficial to serving corps members and recent graduates who were worried about receiving the payment.
This payment of arrears will allow corps members to receive the new ₦77,000 monthly allowance approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is worth noting that payments have ceased for some time, with corps members unsure when or if funds will be disbursed. Now that arrears payments resumes, this serves as exciting news to the corp members.
Interestingly, in previous months of arrears payment, NYSC’s Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had previously assured corps members that once funding was released to NYSC, no corps member would be left out of payments or disadvantaged. He also confirmed that the scheme already had the necessary bank account information for corps members, so funding would flow automatically into the accounts.
Some ex-corps members expressed surprise at the payment resumption. One said, “After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert. But, honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts are worthwhile.
The resumption, on the other hand, has been widely welcomed as a positive step toward restoring trust in the scheme.
The increase to ₦77,000 is part of the government’s efforts to alleviate economic pressure on young Nigerians. Despite conflicting reports of some receiving ₦44,000 in earlier disbursements, the confirmed monthly allowance remains ₦77,000.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, established to promote national unity and prepare Nigerian graduates for future leadership, till date remains an important government initiative. With the reinstatement of arrears payment, corps members are expected to regain morale and focus on their assigned tasks across the country.
