Rivers APC Courting Fubara Ahead of Transition to Civil Rule

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ramped up its efforts to Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the state nears a transition to democratic government.

APC spokesman Darlington Nwauju disclosed on Channels Television that the governor would be welcome if he chose to join the party, and that Fubara would immediately become the leader of the APC in Rivers State if he defected.

Nwauju claimed that the move would strengthen the APC structure in Rivers State and provide the governor with more political capital in future elections. Political watchers have theorized that the APC outreach is constructively part of a broader plan to foreshadow influence in the days leading up to the 2027 elections.

The transition of power comes after six (6) months of emergency rule in Rivers. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.) who has served as the state administrator during the emergency period is expected to formally hand over on Thursday.

President Bola Tinubu, who is on visit to France and Governor Fubara in London, are both expected back in the country on Tuesday just a few days before the transition.

For Fubara, a possible defection to the APC would be consequential. If he crosses over, it could reshape political alliances and dynamics in Rivers. If he remains outside the APC, his options may be more limited.

As Rivers approaches its return to democracy, citizens are hopeful for accountability, transparency, and leadership that addresses the state’s pressing challenges. The political manoeuvres in the coming weeks will play a defining role in shaping governance in the State.
