Rivers State is embarking on a transition back to democratic governance following six months of life under emergency rule.

The state government has announced an interdenominational Thanksgiving service in connection with the transition.

The Thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday at the Ecumenical Centre, Abonnema Wharf Road, Port Harcourt, at 10:00 a.m., and guests are to be in their seats by 9:30 a.m. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) will be the special guest of honour.

Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, stated stakeholders from across the state have been invited, including permanent secretaries, local government chairmen, security chiefs, traditional rulers, heads of boards, to mention a few.

An emergency rule was declared on March 18, 2025, following political crisis and security challenges in Rivers State. The governor, deputy governor and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly were suspended immediately as a result of the federal order, and this was intended to last for six months.

The emergency administration’s tenure will expire on September 18, 2025, leading many to expect that the governor and other elected officials will soon return to office. The anticipation is primarily viewed as a move to restore the state’s full democratic structures.

Political analysts suggest that the transition of power could reduce the ongoing political tensions in Rivers state, while also helping to better build trust between citizens and governance.
